Safeguarding Research Integrity is a Shared Task

“Safeguarding research integrity is a shared task” is the core message of the Science Europe Governing Board in its Open Letter ‘Research Integrity in the European Policy Landscape’ released today. The letter also contributes to the revision of the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity. It provides the opportunity to take stock of the recent policy developments, and of Science Europe’s contribution to the European debate on research integrity. Read more here.

New Policy Brief on FET Flagships

Today the Science Europe Working Group on Horizon 2020 releases a new policy brief on FET Flagships. This policy brief is a contribution to the evaluation and development of Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagships under Horizon 2020. It highlights lessons learned about the added value and limitations of the current FET Flagships and provides recommendations for the development of the FET Flagship instrument. It will also contribute to the high-level round table on the ‘Future of FET Flagships’, organised by the European Commission on 15 December 2016. Read more here.

New Leadership for the Science Europe Scientific Advisory Committee

At a recent meeting of the Science Europe Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) on 16 November, Professor Ola Erstad, Head of the Department of Education at Oslo University, was elected as the new Chair of this cross-disciplinary sounding board. Supporting Professor Erstad in his role will be two Vice-Chairs, Susanne Siebentritt, Professor of Physics and Head of the Laboratory for Photovoltaics at the University of Luxembourg, and Professor Igor Emri, Director of the Center for Experimental Mechanics at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Enhancing the Interoperability of Research

Today the Science Europe Working Group on Research Policy and Programme Evaluation releases a new Position Statement on Research Information Systems. This statement aims to enhance the interoperability of research information systems by providing a set of common principles to guide their development. Read more here.

The Framework Programme Europe Needs

Horizon 2020 is a unique programme worldwide; it is widely appreciated and has an ambitious agenda. It can meet expectations as long as its nature as a programme capable of supporting excellent research is reinforced. Ahead of the launch of the interim evaluation of Horizon 2020, Science Europe wishes to share the extensive experience and collective views of its members, many of whom have decades of experience in setting up world-leading research programmes or are among the main beneficiaries of the Framework Programmes, and to provide recommendations to help prepare future Framework Programmes. Open Access Policies Widely Available and Increasingly Aligned

Discover more about the Open Access (OA) publishing policies in Science Europe Member Organisations in a new report published today. The report highlights the efforts made by public research organisations in Europe to develop and implement OA policies and addresses the challenges faced by different actors in order to facilitate and accelerate the transition towards full OA for all scholarly publications by 2020. Implementing the Data Protection Regulation – Position of Research and Patient Organisations

Today Science Europe and Wellcome Trust release a joint statement from the research community on the implementation of the Data Protection Regulation (DPR). The DPR provides a strong basis for the safe use of personal data in research and Member States now have a crucial role to play in its implementation by reviewing and amending their current laws to enable research to take place. New Survey Report on Postdoctoral Funding Schemes in Europe

The Science Europe Working Group on Research Careers has released today a new survey report mapping the support opportunities available for postdoctoral researchers (postdocs) in order to improve understanding of what funders do to support researchers’ careers after the completion of their PhD, and to learn whether existing funding schemes can be improved in terms of career support. The EU Copyright Reform Recognises Roles of Research but Fails to Realise its Full Potential

A new statement was released today by Science Europe on the EU copyright reform. The current proposal has come a long way in recognising the tremendous potential of new digital technologies for knowledge creation but it is still far from establishing a copyright system that helps Europe realise its full potential. Science Europe Statement on Horizon 2020 Budget: Protect Europe’s True Strategic Investment

A new statement was released today on the Horizon 2020 budget: ‘Funding Research in Horizon 2020: Europe’s Most Valuable Strategic Resource’. Science Europe expresses strong concern that the research funding budget be maximised in Horizon 2020 so that Europe can fully realise its target of becoming a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy. Funding for research and innovation in Europe is a critical strategic investment which is essential for Europe’s long-term growth and prosperity. Read the full statement here.

New Workshop Report ‘The Importance of Content Mining for Science’

The Science Europe Working Group on Research Data has released a workshop report from the event ‘The Importance of Content Mining for Science’. The workshop discussed changes needed in EU copyright in the context of text and data mining in order to encourage better scientific research and the free flow of knowledge across borders. Science Europe session on responsible research and technology at ESOF 2016 on 25 July in Manchester

Science Europe will organise the session “Beyond the ‘Anthropocene’: Where Mankind and Machines Converge” at this year’s ESOF conference.
